The Entertainment Center Project

Hello All,
I need to show you a project that I have been putting off finishing completely... My sweet husband bought me an armoire style entertainment center for Christmas a few years ago and I have loved it. The only problem was that it had very little storage area. And in this house we need just about all the storage we can get.
Here is the armoire:

ANYWAY, we decided to sell the armoire and find something that had more storage for our needs. After searching for quite some time I couldn't find an inexpensive (preferably) 3 piece center that would fit our TV.
Then it occurred to me! I'll create my own! Here's what I found:

This was the most expensive piece in the project- It was almost brand new and I LOVED the style of it. I got the price down from $75 to $65

I loved the "shutter" style doors...

Then I bought these, a three piece set of two towers for $40 and a top to connect the them:

The top:
And then... We pulled out the backs of the towers and put in a solid piece of bead board- this updated the look completely!

The painting.... This part seemed to take FOR-EVER!!!! I'm telling you, painting laminate is hard work, I seriously WILL NOT paint another piece of laminate again! (I will be eating those words)

After painting everything I sanded it down.
I HIGHLY recommend Minwax's finishing poly! I waited a few weeks before I applied it and the pieces had already started to have paint chipping and peeling- so I touched it up and sealed it with the Minwax and it has been PERFECT! No chipping or peeling what-so-ever!

I will show you the rest on another day! :)

  1. Love it Carissa! The beadboard looks great! I can only imagine how tiresome it was to paint all those pieces. Thanks for the tip on the Minwax!

  3. Looks Great! The bead board was a great touch! Can't wait to see it all put together! Which minwax did you use? Did it yellow at all? I've been having a hard time finding stuff that doesnt yellow my white paint!

  4. Visiting from POP. What a transformation! It reminds me of a wall unit I made from unrelated, laminate pieces. http://www.thediyspot.com/2010/06/a-bedroom-wall-unit/
By the way Zinsler primer works great on laminates.
